Hello friends, this month I visit Chelsea’s new gallery on the block, Hauser & Wirth Editions at 443 West 18th Street.
Trees are flaunting their blossoms and I feel like voguing in wearable art by Engineered by Andrea T. This fantastical pink pouffe mocks the cherry blossoms, embellishing a slim black dress with Andrea’s trademark geometric details—in this case, triangular cut-outs at the shoulder. Goth platform boots balance the extravagant silhouette, which would have overpowered dainty heels.
Swiss-founded in 1992, Hauser & Wirth has 22 global locations, including two in Chelsea. The Editions gallery opened in July 2023. It exhibits contemporary and historical prints and offers public educational programs focusing on collaborations between artists and master printers.
The Editions gallery also houses H&W’s Publishers Bookstore (chock-a-block with enticing art books, magazines, and ephemera from their publishing arm) and the Roth Bar functional art installation.
Chelsea art lovers like me may remember savoring cocktails at the previous Roth Bar incarnation at 548 West 22nd Street, or maybe you even remember the Roth Bar at H&W’s first New York location (Est. 2013) at 511 West 18th Street—former location of the Roxy roller rink and ground-breaking hip hop dance club. I wish I had been there!
The Roth Bar was first conceived by Swiss artist Dieter Roth in the early 1980s. The bar has popped up from Reykjavik to St. Moritz. Roth’s son and grandsons continue to incorporate industrial artwork made from salvaged materials into each new iteration.
H&W gallery assistant Rachel Adler told me that the Roth Bar at Editions is open to the public during special events. Visit their free educational event, “ENCOUNTERS: a day of experimental performance and film” Sunday, April 28, 12 to 5 PM. Register on their website.
The current exhibition, on view until April 20, features an intimate creative dialogue conducted in vibrant silkscreens between lifelong partners in art and life, Parisian artists Takesada Matsutani and Kate Van Houten.
Next, Rita Ackermann‘s large-scale silkscreens will be at Editions from May 2 to July 26, while her paintings will be displayed simultaneously at H&W’s 542 West 22nd Street location.

Love your page. Do you know where my wife could find a gently used Gala gown for an upcoming Black Tie event ?
Thanks
Thanks, Richard! I suggest New York Vintage at 117 W 25th St. https://www.newyorkvintage.com/
I got a dress for the UN Gala there, and the price was better than Lord & Taylor’s, Bergdorfs, and Macy’s. Plus the styles were much more interesting.
I absolutely LOVE the pink pouff! It is so you and is in perfect proportion with the rest of your habille, not to mention your fab figure! Everything is sensational!!
Aww, thanks, Linda! I am in love with the pouffe!!
And let’s not forget the 20,000 plus cherry blossom trees in Vancouver B.C. It certainly brings spring into clear focus when they start to bloom, a gorgeous sight.
Ah, what a gorgeous sight!
The goth boots are really out there (in a good way) and the pink pouffe is beautiful.
Hauser and Wirth is just behind my apartment and I can view it’s roof from my
balcony. Never have been inside, so will have to visit it soon.
Yes, you must! Stop by when you’re getting your pizza! 🙂 xx
Cherry blossoms! Why we keep living!
Right?!!
Just love these columns–where I always learn valuable info about my very own nabe, Chelsea! I had no idea there was a new incarnation of the Roth Bar at Hauser & Wirth. The former version was one of my favorite spots in NY.
I’ll have to keep up with the special events.
and love the pink pouffe sleeves!
Thanks, Pat! We must go there the next time there’s an event! I am in love with the pink pouffe!
